Are you in or out?
I’ve been taking more days to stay at home and write. No, you haven’t seen more writing but that’s a whole other story. Carly, our 11 month old puppy, is completely intrigued by any movement. She chases butterflies, birds and her most favorite are reflections. I know the time of day by the reflections. 4:05pm, the reflection hits from outside scattering across our office floor. Carly can stay self-entertained until at least 5:30pm chasing the small moving lights, trying desperately to gobble them up off the floor. On the days I’m at the home office, she stands at the door watching the movement in the yard – butterflies, birds, lizards and the lights, oh the lights, from the hanging crystals in the patio. She whimpers and whines to go outside. Open the door and she stands waiting for you to go first. She knows THAT trick, she goes first and the door closes and she is by herself. Let me back in!!
Go outside with her and she is happy. Happy like Snoopy dancing on his dog house – remember that? Circa 1950. Carly bounds through the yard snapping at leaves, butterflies and flowers that bloom on tall stalks. If there is no movement in the yard, she is also perfectly content digging for gophers; creating her own movement, dirt flying through the air. When she is out, she stands and ponders whether she wants to come back inside and leave the excitement and unknown of the outside world. I stand in the door saying, “In or out? Come on, in or out?” Inside she intently peers through the windows longing for the outside, but only if someone goes with her.
In or Out? The last few months I’ve thought a lot about this phrase. Are you in or out? Are there things in your life where you are giving your all? Where you are all in? 100% 150% 200%
Can you say this about your family? About your Godwalk? About your work? Are you giving them your all? Are you living your passion out loud? It’s seems we are often standing inside looking out at this delightful world where things fly in the air, mystifying reflections move about the ground and everything has a magical feel. We wonder why we don’t get to experience life like that. Why we are just on the outside looking in, or in this case on the inside looking out. The inside where it is safe, warm, and non-threatening. No real surprises, the unknown doesn’t really exist. It’s secure and comfortable.
Ah, but venture outside, outside your comfort zone, what then? It can feel like falling down the rabbit hole. Everything is big and bold, moving lightening fast. It’s hard to catch on, to grab hold. But unless you try, nothing changes. Want change? Throw the door open, go. Just jump! Even if you have to do it alone – jump. Make change. Follow the reflections of light and see where they take. Are you in or out?
